August is a wonderful month for Italian cooking! Some of the most delicious fruits and vegetables are currently in season, from juicy peaches to plump tomatoes. Now is a great time to visit Basta Pasta to savor one of their delicious seasonal dishes. In the meantime, try one of the following Italian recipes in your own kitchen!

Tomato Sauce

Have you ever made your own tomato sauce from scratch? If not, you’re in for a world of flavor! This basic tomato sauce is made extraordinary with locally grown tomatoes and fresh herbs. Gather 10 pounds of fresh tomatoes, one tablespoon of olive oil, one diced onion, two minced garlic cloves, two teaspoons of sea salt, two teaspoons of black pepper, one teaspoon of fresh basil, and one teaspoon of oregano. Boil the tomatoes in a large pot over high heat, allowing them to cool before peeling the skins. Core the tomatoes, then place them in a food processor and puree until smooth. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat and add the onions and garlic. Once the onions are cooked down, add in the basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir the mixture until fragrant and then pour in the tomato puree! Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for two hours or until it thickens. Add salt and pepper to your liking and enjoy on pasta, pizza, and more!

Orange, Olive, and Fennel Salad

The combination of salty olives, sweet oranges, and sharp fennel make this dish one to remember! In a small bowl, whisk together ⅓ cup of olive oil, ⅓ cup freshly-squeezed orange juice, and salt and pepper to taste. Toss the dressing in a large bowl with a few handfuls of arugula. Add sliced oranges, thinly sliced fennel, and ½ cup of pitted black olives into the bowl. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and enjoy!

Prosciutto e Melone

During the summer, there’s nothing like the sweet and salty melody of prosciutto and cantaloupe! This recipe only requires two ingredients, which makes it the perfect pair for a picnic or outdoor gathering. Ball the melon for bite-sized snacks, or cut it into wedges for simplicity! Drape the freshly sliced prosciutto over the cantaloupe and enjoy with a chilled glass of white wine!
