The only thing better than spending National Picnic Month with your friends and family is spending National Picnic Month with Basta Pasta, too! If you love authentic Italian cuisine and want to bring a taste of Italy on your picnic, here are some of our best tips for arranging the perfect Italian picnic.

Set the Mood

Italian picnics are typically held in public parks or private gardens so that once the meal has been enjoyed, all of the guests can relax in the sun or the shade. Go to a park near your home and look for a secluded nook that would be perfect for an Italian picnic. Don’t worry about not having a picnic table at the park either—true Italians are just as happy lounging on a blanket or towel while they eat. If you will be enjoying Italian cuisine after a rainy morning, bring an old shower curtain liner or tarp to place down on the grass first.

It’s All About the Food

The perfect Italian picnic requires the perfect Italian cuisine. Start the picnic with easy-to-eat finger foods that everyone can enjoy, including:

  • Aged or soft cheeses including Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano, or Mozzarella
  • Cured meats including prosciutto, speck, salami, or mortadella
  • Olives
  • Fresh cut vegetables like carrots, fennel, celery, or peppers
  • Fresh cut fruit like melon, figs, or pears
  • Crusty Italian bread to eat with everything, like rolls or focaccia

Did you think that we are done? Think again! Most Italian picnics include a wide variety of finger foods followed by a few cold dishes to found out the meal. Some of the most common dishes prepared for this course include insalata di pasta fredda (rice or couscous), stuffed vegetables, and small savory tarts or quiches.

Ready for dessert? The Italian picnic is traditionally ended with a delicious selection of Italian fruits including cherries, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, or plums.

Don’t Forget the Drinks

Italian cuisine is also known for fine and delicious Italian wines. If your Italian picnic is going to occur over the summer, keep it simple and opt for a summer favorite like Chianti Classico, Rose, or a sparkling and crisp white wine like Prosecco.
